InlandLinks, the port of Rotterdam's online intermodal platform, has developed an application to reduce the transport of empty containers
According to the Port of Rotterdam, 25% (2.5M TEU) of all containers shipped over its facilities by road, rail or inland shipping are empty. Shipping "fresh air" is expensive and inefficient and impacts the environment more than necessary.
InlandLinks' new Empty Depot tool is claimed to be a real breakthrough in terms of efficiency and sustainability for the entire logistical chain. The online application shows, per connected shipping company, the inland terminals where shippers and logistical service providers can pick up and deposit empty containers, and later reuse these containers for a new load. As a result, it is no longer always necessary to return the empty containers to Rotterdam.
This is a logical choice, all the more so because the containers regularly return empty to a shipper in the hinterland for the next freight. A number of shipping companies have already signed up to use the platform.
